You have heard the phrase, Everything old becomes new again .
You bet, this is true for mopeds too. A lot of scooter producers are
coming out with new scooters that look retro. I think it's cool. I kind
of like the way retro vehicles look. Scooters like the Honda
Metropolitan and the Vespa GVS 250 look like old scooters from days
gone by.
At just about the 20th century, scooters made there way to the European market. They resembled what we think of as a moped in this day and age. A bike with a motor attached is kind of a good way to think of it. By the late 1910's people in the USA were driving scooters, but they still never reached the popularity of the auto mobile. Here is a look at some of the better know scooters on the market today:
The Cushman Company -- This company produced a lot of the motor bikes that you see G.I's riding in WWII films. They stopped building scooters in 1965, but they continue to produce different types of motor vehicles.
Mitsubishi -- One of the first scooters made in Japan was the Mitsubishi Silver Pigeon. It was a scooter largely made of warplane wheels and discarded warplane parts, believe it or not.
The King of Retro - Vespa -- The Vespa is one of the coolest scooter brands today. They are considered the standard for scooters in Europe.
Honda Scooters -- Vintage has not escaped Honda, anchored by the Metropolitan. The granddaddy of the me all though, is the Super Cub, which was introduced in 1958. This little moped type scooter went on to sell over 60 million units worldwide.
You can not go wrong with a Honda. They have sold more scooters than any other company. In fact, the Honda Motor Company makes more engines than any other company in the world if you count generators, cars, lawnmowers, snow blowers, etc.......
It's cool that they are bringing back the retro scooter look. Most of them are just for looks and will come with 4 stroke engines that are water cooled instead of 2 stroke engines. Fuel injection is also a key feature that has been added to the newer versions.
What is old becomes new again.
